A Preview of The Haunted World of El Superbeasto

Rob Zombie is known for his serious take on horror. His style is no-holds-barred, in-your-face cinematography. With blood splashing amid sounds of helpless victim screaming, Rob Zombie movies can be pretty unsettling. Plus, all that gore can make you pretty squeamish. So it comes as something of a surprise when it was announced that Rob Zombie would be releasing, not just a comedy, but an animated comedy called The Haunted World of El Superbeasto.

Don’t plan on watching this one with the kids. Rob Zombie’s The Haunted World of El Superbeasto is a cartoon for an adult audience. In the same vein as Ralph Bakshi’s Fritz the Cat and Cool World, it contains adult humor, raunchy visuals, and some elements of a horror film (it’s Rob Zombie, remember).

The film is based upon the comic book created by Rob Zombie and published by Spookshow International. The graphic novel was then published by Image Comics in 2007. The story follows a wrestler named El Superbeasto as he adventures through a place called Monsterland. It is an intense and warped film straight from Zombie’s twisted imagination.

Rob Zombie The Haunted World of El Superbeasto Production

The animation for the Rob Zombie The Haunted World of El Superbeasto flick is traditional 2-D cell animation. The film has been worked on by a slew of animators from all over Hollywood, including a group who have done some work for Disney.

But this is no Disney film. The animation is similar to a stylized Saturday morning cartoon with lots of dark and creepy background elements.

Production on Rob Zombie’s The Haunted World of El Superbeasto began in 2006. When it came to the The Haunted World of El Superbeasto script, Rob Zombie did the writing along with Mr. Lawrence and Tom Papa. Zombie shared directing credits with Mr. Lawrence and Carey Yost.

The movie was initially due out in 2007 but was delayed due to Zombie’s other commitments and projects. When The Haunted World of El Superbeasto news was announced, he was still working on The Devils Rejects. An initial release date was announced for May 2007 but that was pushed back when Zombie began work on his remake of Halloween. He told animators that he could not work on two projects at once so work for The Haunted World of El Superbeasto was put on hold.

After Zombie wrapped up Halloween, he got back to work on The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. The film’s first cut was completed on August 2007 and by September 2008, Zombie claimed the film was near completion and would be ready before Halloween of 2009.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto theme is similar to cartoons like Scooby-Doo or Sponge Bob but filthier. Scenes had to be edited to make sure the movie got a rating of R instead of NC-17.

Rob Zombie The Haunted World of El Superbeasto Plot

The plot of The Haunted World of El Superbeasto follows El Superbeasto, a washed-up, mask-wearing former wrestler with super strength. As a resident of Monsterland, El Superbeasto is the producer and star of BeastoWorld Enterprises. But in his spare time, El Superbeasto fights evil along with the help of his sexy sidekick sister, Susi X.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto script pits El Superbeasto against the villainous Dr. Satan, a devil-faced antagonist. The hero must prevent the horny foe from marrying the foul-mouthed stripper, Velvet Von Black.

The landscape of Monsterland is populated with minor characters such as Joe Cthulhu, Gerard the Exterminator, and Murray the Robot.

The film is adult in nature. It includes nude scenes, raunchy humor, strong language, and enough adult situations to make South Park look like a Hannah-Barbarra cartoon.

Rob Zombie El Superbeasto Cast

The film The Haunted World of El Superbeasto includes an impressive cast doing the voices for the characters. Getting talent for the film proved easier once Paul Giamatti signed on. As a talented and versatile actor, many wanted a chance to work with him. Some of the top actors in the film and their characters include:

  • Rosario Dawson – Velvet Von Black
  • Paul Giamatti – Dr. Satan
  • Tom Papa – El Superbeasto
  • Sheri Moon Zombie – Susie X
  • Danny Trejo – Rico
  • Brian Posehn - Murray
  • Clint Howard – Joe Cthulu
  • Geofrrey Lewis – Lenny
  • Harland Williams – Gerard the Exterminator
  • Dee Wallace – Trixie

Rob Zombie The Haunted World of El Superbeasto Delays

In a recent The Haunted World of El Superbeasto interview, Rob Zombie stated the reason for the delay of the movie’s release was due to legal issues and ownership rights. Apparently, the company that Zombie started the film with was bought out and changed ownership several times before the movie could be completed.

Another factor was the film’s escalating budget. The Haunted World of El Superbeasto started out with a budget of half million. But as production continued and the executives in charge of the company focused on other things, the budget kept getting higher. When the movie was completed, the budget was well over a million.

After completion, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto sat on the shelf while the company’s corporate think tank decided what to do with it. Since it is not a  typical animated film, such as Disney or even family-friendly like Shrek, marketing it was difficult to figure out.

Rob Zombie The Haunted World of El Superbeasto Website

Rob Zombie's The Haunted World of El Superbeasto official website should contain all of the information relevant to the upcoming release. A menu contains categories such as news, media, gallery, characters, cast, and downloads.

But many of those categories have not been finished. All you see is the typical ‘coming soon’.

What you can see from the official website is the graphics and overall look of the adult cartoon. The site’s intro warns that it contains adult material and anyone who is squeamish should not enter. If they ever get the site finished, it will be interesting to see what is included.
